Holy Cow! Daphne, the miniature, horned heifer at Pennsbury Manor, is turning one!
William Penn’s reconstructed 17-century estate along the Delaware River invites visitors to celebrate this very special birthday in the barnyard. On Saturday, April 4 from 2-4 p.m., guests can join the staff in celebrating the first birthday of Daphne, the site’s curious young cow and newest animal resident.
Born on a Pennsylvania farm, Daphne – whose full registered name is Lively Daffodil – arrived at Pennsbury last year to join the historic site’s educational animal collection. A miniature Hereford heifer, Daphne closely resembles the size and appearance of cattle that would have lived on farms like Pennsbury during the 17th century.
“Daphne has been a wonderful addition to our living collection,” said Carole Cunliffe, Animal Curator at Pennsbury Manor. “Hereford cattle are known for their calm, docile temperament, which makes them ideal for Pennsbury where visitors can learn about historic farming practices. And as a horned female, Daphne helps us explain that cows – not just bulls – can grow horns.”
The animals at Pennsbury Manor teach visitors, including thousands of local students each year, about the types of animals that historically would have been at William Penn’s home during the 17th century.
Visitors celebrating Daphne’s big day can create cards for the birthday girl, play lawn games, and join a special “Happy Birthday” sing-along at 3:30 p.m. Free cupcakes will be available for the first 100 visitors.
Members of Pennsbury Manor will also receive a special gift: free daffodil bulbs for the first 50 member families, a nod to Daphne’s full name, Lively Daffodil.
Daphne has quickly made herself at home in the barnyard. Known for her inquisitive personality, she enjoys visiting the sheep throughout the day and watching the geese waddle by.
Daphne is social and well suited to interacting with Pennsbury’s volunteers and visitors. Although many cows enjoy apples and carrots, Daphne has her own preferences. She prefers a steady supply of hay and her special heifer grain — proof that this birthday girl knows exactly what she likes. With her curious nature and gentle temperament, staff say Daphne is a “moo-valous” addition to the barnyard.
