For Philadelphia ceramicist Mackenzie Pikaart (she/her), the objects we use every day hold more than utility. They carry potential for memory, reflection, and connection. That belief shapes the work she creates at MVP STUDIO, where handcrafted ceramics are designed to enrich daily life while fostering a deeper sense of community.
Pikaart’s practice is rooted in the idea that art should be lived with, not set apart. She lives by the idea that food tastes better when consumed from handmade vessels. MVP STUDIO’s collections include bowls, plates, serving pieces, vases and lighting, that bring both function and expression to the table and home.
Pikaart’s main style of working is called Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese technique where pigmented clay is layered to make agate surfaces, each piece is unique and when grouped together feel familial. In her studio Mackenzie takes on the laborious task of hand pigmenting clay, layering it many times over, while creating its language as she works. Drawing on influences from architecture, poetry, and music, Pikaart brings rhythm, movement, and depth into these surfaces. The finished pieces capture this dance, resulting in ceramics that are both intentional and eye catching.
In addition to her personal practice, Pikaart is committed to teaching and collaboration. She leads intensives, long form classes and workshops that invite participants to explore the tactile and rewarding process of working with clay. Her teaching emphasizes accessibility and creativity, offering both beginners and seasoned makers the opportunity to experience the joy of making something by hand.
A graduate of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pikaart has remained closely tied to the city, building a career that combines craftsmanship with community engagement. Pikaart often hosts potluck dinners where her work becomes part of the shared experience. Bowls hold food, but also serve as a foundation for conversation and connection. For her, the value of handmade objects extends beyond the studio. They belong in real-life gatherings where stories are shared and relationships deepen.
In a time when so much feels fast and disposable, MVP STUDIO stands as a reminder that the objects we choose to live with can add richness and meaning. Pikaart’s work encourages us to pause, gather, and connect, whether around the dinner table, in a workshop, or in the quiet of our own routines.
