What we call Washington Crossing was at one time Taylorsville, a village founded by the Taylor family in the early 19th century. Most of the buildings that make up Taylorsville are now part of Washington Crossing Park. The buildings along Rt. 532 were owned by various members of the Taylor family, including a general store opened by Mahlon Taylor in 1828. Mahlon was the most successful and wealthy member of the Taylor family. Not long before Taylorsville was built, General George Washington lead an army across the Delaware on Christmas Day, 1776 in a surprise attack on a Hessian garison in Trenton, New Jersey— a battle that changed the course of our War for Independence.
