David Mancuso
This example of 19th century American folk art tinsel/foil reverse glass painting found at David Mancuso Antiques at the Old Church is an extremely well done floral arrangement in classical style vase. It is in good condition. The popularity of tinsel paintings lasted almost the entire 19th century. The art involved a laborious process of tracing the drawing on glass and then filing in the dark areas with lampblack and the colored areas with transparent oil paints. Then the tinsel was applied. The tinsel was actually foil from tea or cigar packages. It was either put on with putty or sewn on.
