For over fifty years, the Bucks County Intermediate Unit (Bucks IU) has provided exceptional special education programs and services to children and youth with disabilities (ages birth to 21). With the addition of the Bucks IU SEQUEL Program, that expertise has now expanded to programs for adults with disabilities (ages 21+). SEQUEL’s Community Participation program is designed to support these adults in developing their own interests and connections in the community that will enhance and promote their ability to live more independently.
Growth Through Participation
Everyone gains knowledge and confidence by actively creating meaningful connections through participation. That is the premise of the SEQUEL Community Participation program. Participants are introduced and share in various events and activities within their community such as ordering at restaurants or coffee shops and socializing with others, attending a movie, helping at a local food bank, or supporting community events. Through this participation, individuals in the program gain knowledge, social skills, self-sufficiency, and self-assurance so that they may become comfortable being an active and supportive member of their community.
Adult program participants have developed a partnership with a local men's singing group and together they spread holiday cheer with seasonal songs at local senior centers.
The SEQUEL team matches each individual participant’s preferences, needs, and interests to specific supports and activities. This is accomplished through a focus on four key areas:
- Life Experience - Provide the experiences, opportunities, and supports necessary to be an engaged member of the community.
- Independence - Build life and job skills, and abilities that encourage independence and value in the community.
- Personal Growth and Development - Support being a good neighbor, friend and/orco-worker.
- Relationships - Nurture community relationships supporting inclusion by creating a presence that is meaningful and appreciated.
