Many locals in Bucks County remember the old Zadars building in New Hope. What was once an eyesore in the heart of the quaint town has been truly revitalized by the team at J.R. Maxwell Builders, Inc. into an incredible new venture: The Ghost Light Inn and a new restaurant, Stella. Purchased by the owners of the Bucks County Playhouse, the project took five years to complete, all while J.R. Maxwell craftsmen were building Ferry Market and completing the Deck Bar at the Playhouse (which was also previously renovated by J.R. Maxwell). All three of these projects included custom millwork from Mink Run Millwork, a division of J.R. Maxwell Builders. The three buildings celebrate the uniqueness of Bucks County and New Hope while incorporating the elegance of modern architecture.
Together with Ralph Fey Architects, J.R. Maxwell worked with the property owners to achieve their goals in design and function from the very beginning. The Ghost Light Inn is a twelve-room boutique hotel, which occupies the third floor. Each room is different from the next, and all are filled with custom furniture built in-house by Mink Run Millwork (you can find rooms thirteen through fifteen at The Carriage House, which J.R. Maxwell completed renovations on four years ago). The second level of the building is occupied by local acclaimed chef Jose Garces’ new restaurant, Stella. J.R. Maxwell Builders specifically sought out Chef Garces and introduced him to the project, as the chef’s Luna Farm is located in Bucks County. The first floor is the hotel lobby, which is built to feature custom-patina glass doors that lead to a transitional space with polished concrete floors, and glass doors that open right up to the promenade (extended by J.R. Maxwell to connect to the Playhouse and make the riverfront more accessible) and a serene view of the Delaware River.
The building boasts an incredible amount of custom work and design by Mink Run Millwork and J.R. Maxwell Builders. Along with the furniture throughout the inn’s rooms, they also constructed a custom heated raised deck off the side of the restaurant area, using Unalam glulam timber beams, built an outdoor masonry fireplace, and accented the structure with custom rustic wood beams. We are proud to have worked with the owners at the Bucks County Playhouse on so many incredible projects, and we’re also thrilled to have engineered this building side-by-side with an amazing architectural firm.
