Myth: I don’t have any symptoms of breast cancer or a family history, so I don’t need to worry about an annual mammogram.
Truth: There are many women who are diagnosed with breast cancer without having a family history of this disease.
At St. Mary Breast Center, our 3D mammography technology can detect abnormalities up to three years before you can see or feel it. If breast cancer is detected and treated before it spreads to other parts of the body, the survival rate can be as high as 90%.
Appointments for these life-saving tests are usually available within 24 hours at St. Mary Medical Center’s imaging locations in Langhorne and Richboro. Call 215.710.2208 to make an appointment.
Myth: If you’re under age 40, a breast lump can’t be cancer.
Truth: Whenever you feel a lump that’s new or unusual, it’s a good idea to talk to your OB-GYN or primary care provider. At any age, even a tiny lump can potentially be cancer.
Myth: Men can’t get breast cancer.
Truth: Breast cancer is most often found in women, but men can get breast cancer too. About 1 out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man.
Myth: An abnormal mammogram result always means cancer.
Truth: An abnormal mammogram result essentially means that something needs further examination. There could be a non-cancerous tumor, cyst, or a need for additional images.
At St. Mary Breast Center, our team understands that an abnormal result can be stressful and strives to get you answers quickly. All follow-up appointments are arranged right here, so you don’t need to drive into Philadelphia to get the care you need. Our breast health nurse navigators will guide and support you if additional imaging and specialist appointments are needed.
