Robert Winn, owner of Import1 Motorsport is no ordinary car dealer. “My car,” he says, “is the one I drive home on any given night.” Robert drives cars from his own inventory as his own personal test before they are given the rigorous performance testing and detailing to make them ready to sell. Known for Corvettes, antiques and collectibles, Import1 Motorsport is actually a dealership where customers can buy anything from a Nissan Pathfinder to a 1923 Ford T Bucket. “Our motto is we sell the practical to the collectible and everything in between.” It is a dealership for any family member in need of a dependable vehicle as much as it is a dealership for sports car enthusiasts and collectors.
Robert never set out to be a car dealer. Smiling boyishly, he says, “I’ve always worked with cars but until I opened my own dealership, I never worked at a dealership.” In fact Robert pleads ignorance when it comes to how other dealerships do their business. He has his own business model—a model based on personal relationships and customer service.
Robert began working with cars in the family business. “We were in the car wash and car detailing business for ten years,” he explains. “Eventually I linked people who were having their cars detailed for sale to buyers.” This business broadened, and Robert began to sell cars online and chose selling cars as a full time career in 1997. In 2011 he opened up at his current location in Pipersville.
Robert attributes his success to what he calls personalized service. From the days of matching buyers with sellers, he never stopped building relationships with his customers. “We stand behind our products.” Warranties are given on vehicles sold at Import 1 Motorsport and the cars undergo rigorous inspections, are detailed and repaired when necessary. They are given what Robert calls a “proactive prep.”
Both Robert Winn and Kip Vaughn, his general manager, are committed to service and a laid back friendly approach to doing business. They see a customer as someone who they get to know over a long period of time. And the buyer and seller have access to Robert anytime during business hours. “They can reach me on my cell. I get calls and texts every day.”
Robert’s reputation as a trustworthy car dealer is boosted by his eBay sales. For more than 19 years Robert has been selling cars on eBay. Robert says, “I’ve shipped cars all over the world, from Germany to Australia and all over the USA. And it is the positive feedback that we get we get from eBay that has propelled the inventory. We have a stellar online reputation.”
