Following the COVID-19 shutdown, individuals from all tracks of life faced numerous unfamiliar challenges in their daily life. One social group that endured the most difficulties were the senior citizens of our communities. Not only were they at a higher risk for contracting the virus, but they were disconnected from their friends and family due to social distancing guidelines. Suddenly, life became digital, with a dependence on technology for everything - from online shopping to online school to online business meetings. As technology rapidly changed and evolved to adapt to this new “normal,” the elderly were left behind. They struggled to catch up with the widespread use of technology. Founded during quarantine, Teens Teach Technology is a youth organization that supports the elderly through virtual lessons at libraries and nursing homes about the daily use of technology. The organization is based in Long Island, New York, and several chapters have been established across the country. So far, Teens Teach Technology’s 120 volunteers have partnered with 28 facilities, teaching 26 different lessons to 140 seniors.
Central Bucks South Sophomore, Diya Hundiwala, 16, has founded a chapter of her own in Pennsylvania as the Chapter President. To spread awareness and expand the activities of her chapter, she established a club at Central Bucks High School South, and she currently manages a team of about twenty high school students. “After observing the struggles of my grandmother with technology all the way in India and watching her quickly adapt to new social media platforms with some guidance, I began to realize that millions of other seniors may be facing the same struggle, and they may not have anyone to help them,” Diya says. “Teens Teach Technology is a meaningful initiative to give a helping hand to the elderly community during these challenging times while earning volunteer hours!”
The Pennsylvania Chapter invites any high schooler who may be interested in volunteering with Teens Teach Technology to view our website for more details: www.teensteachtechnology.org If you are an interested Central Bucks South Student, please email us at cbsouthteensteachtech@gmail.com.
