The Rothman Specialty Hospital on 3300 Tillman Drive, Bensalem, Pennsylvania has announced that Men’s Health Week is celebrated each June on the week leading up to and including Father’s Day. The purpose of the observance is to encourage early detection and treatment of preventable health problems and diseases among men.
American men tend to live sicker and die younger than women. The Center of Disease Control has shown that men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death, including heart disease, cancer and stroke. Today, on the average, American men die six years younger than American woman. This contrasts with statistics from the 1920s when the gap was only one year.
One reason for this disparity is that women are 100 per cent more likely to visit their doctor for annual examinations and preventative services than men. Regular checkups and screenings can prevent early death and disability. On average men should have their blood pressure checked annually, and when they are over 50, they should have a physical examination annually. The most important tests for men are blood pressure, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, immunizations, prostate cancer, diabetes, skin cancer and testicular cancer.
