The Reeds at Shelter Haven is 37-room luxury boutique, year-round resort that is situated on the bay and two blocks from the beach at the corner of 96th Street and Third Avenue in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. Although The Reed

s at Shelter Haven is in its 5th season, its history predates it by 100 years when the Shelter Haven Hotel opened in September 1912. It was then called “the brightest spot in Stone Harbor.” Built on the same spot as its predecessor, The Reeds at Shelter Haven shares the memory of the old hotel in its name. Executive Director of Marketing Julie Yeager says, “Our name pays homage to the old hotel and to the natural surroundings. Reeds are indigenous plants to the area.” Harbor residents or visitors can return to the property to take a walk down memory lane as a number of old photos still hang on the walls in the new hotel.
The Reeds has 37 rooms, 11 of which are suites. Room types feature Town or Bay views, several have balconies, and offer Queen, King, or two Queen beds. The design is rustic coastal chic with a neutral, seaside palette that warmly welcomes guests during all four seasons. Suites feature fireplaces, mini kitchens and living spaces, and turndown amenities on higher floors. The Skye Suite is the premier, penthouse level accommodation with two balconies and full chef’s kitchen, where Executive Chef Juan Hernandez is more than happy to personally create a one-of-a-kind meal for guests any day of the week.
This year construction is beginning on an extension across street. This will include a two story spa and fitness center and an additional 22 rooms. This extension will open next summer.
One of the unique features of a stay at The Reeds is Beach Butler service. A simple call to the concierge office will get you and your family driven to the beach in an electric car stocked with branded beach chairs, towels, tags, and umbrellas. Beach Butlers will set up equipment and provide the beach tags. They will also bring little surprises throughout the day, including water and things like water ice. You only need your bathing suits.
With The Reeds Bay Activities Center on the Shelter Haven Basin, guests can explore the bay by way of kayaks, pedal boats, paddleboards, and more. As a hotel guest, these services are complimentary in addition to the beach butler program and daily morning yoga on the Roof Garden. Similarly, guests of the hotel are able to play Stone Harbor’s prestigious, private golf course while vacationing at The Reeds.
With five restaurants, The Reeds has one of the most outstanding culinary programs on the coast: The Water Star Grille offers a true experiential evening for bayside dining and has become the place to be seen at the Shore; SAX is open all year with an eclectic and globally inspired menu and innovative cocktails; Buckets Margarita Bar and Cantina is a taqueria-style restaurant with casual meals served all day long and themed days throughout the week; and Wafflewich Ice Cream and Waffle Shop showcases the mouthwatering waffle and-ice-cream sandwich made famous on Coney Island. Already opened this spring 2017, Stone Harbor Pizza Pub will be the fifth dining concept at The Reeds. To accompany the pizza and pub fare, a full bar will be offered and feature a “local's corner:” 12 taps of local craft breweries. For those cruising the waterways on the lookout for a great dining destination, the Water Star Grille has a “Dock ’N Dine” program where guests can dock their boats and eat in the restaurant, or have their meal come to them for a bay front experience.
Off season the Reeds at Shelter Haven offers the most exclusive seaside-wedding destination at the New Jersey shore. The options range from an intimate sundeck ceremony with stunning water views, bayside cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on a covered veranda, to dinner and dancing in the spacious Sweet Grass Ballroom with wall-to-wall sliding doors that open to the outdoor veranda overlooking the sparkling harbor.
