Sculpture Feature

Art in Bucks County is as much a part of our County’s identity as the Delaware River, covered bridges, fertile farms and charming villages. The artists inform our individual and collective conscientiousness. Through their works we find joy and beauty, see a connection to our past, connect to each other, question an issue, have faith for the future and feed our spirit.
Like painting, three-dimensional art in Bucks County enjoys a long history. Some of the early sculptors who paved the way for this art form to flourish here are Selma Burke, Stella Elkins Tyler, Harry Rosin and Charles Rudy. With each passing year, dating from the 1930s, the number of talented sculptors has grown—and with them, our appreciation of this most marvelous art form.
In the following pages we introduce you to four Bucks County sculptors and to the annual Sweet Edge Sculpture Tour that’s fast becoming a fall favorite. Two of the sculptors, John McDevitt and Steven Snyder, will be on this year’s tour, as well as have had opened their studios to the tour since its beginning four years ago. Sculptor George Anthonisen was a guest sculptor last year and James L. Gafgen is a well-known sculptor from Morrisville.
