The famed Italian film director Federico Fellini once remarked that life was a combination of magic and pasta. Had Fellini been fortunate to have tasted Tom Sciascia’s chocolate truffles, no doubt he would have added them to his list of life’s essential ingredients. A magical tour de force in their own right, Tom’s truffles raise the bar in the chocolate world and leave you with that “aha” moment of finally discovering what real chocolate—artisanal chocolate—tastes like. For as the owner and chocolatier of The Painted Truffle, Tom hand makes each mouthwatering morsel, creating works of art both pleasing to look at and delectable to savor.
I confess. For years I’ve been a devoted Painted Truffle fan and steady customer at his stand in the Stockton Market. And though we always chat at his stand—as he does with his other customers—I relished the thought of talking with him at his chocolate studio.
