Lookaway
According to renowned golf course architect Rees Jones, “the land tells you what you can and can’t do.” so when a few avid golfers conceived the idea of building a great golf course in Bucks County, they knew they needed the right property. As the number of founders grew, they eventually found land that fulfilled their vision; to create a pure golf experience that would stand the test of time, with a service model, features and course accessibility not found at other clubs in the region. In addition to rolling hills, streams and wooded backdrops that excited Rees Jones the first time he laid eyes on it, the property traced its lineage back to 1713, when William Penn created the first deed of Buckingham Township. A further bonus was the opportunity to renovate and preserve the mid-1700s architecture of the buildings on the land that had once served as a dairy farm. Lookaway Golf Club officially opened in 1999 to rave reviews of its course layout and design. The renovated and expanded 18th century Manor House, with its Bucks County architecture, is the oldest building used as a clubhouse in the United States. This centuries-old Manor House creates the ambiance of a warm and welcoming clubhouse. The founders placed paramount importance on creating a golf-only club that puts the members’ needs first. Lookaway is a private equity club, with each of the 229 members as a part-owner. As partners, they make the decisions on the governance of the club for the long-term benefit of the partnership. Lookaway Golf Club has been a supportive community member since its opening. The Club and its partners go above and beyond when they sponsor a golf event for a special cause. In 2008, they held a First Tee fundraiser which raised $50,000 for the Philadelphia chapter which at the time was the largest amount raised by a private club in the United States. The First Tee Program, now also in its 20th year, has introduced golf and its life skills education to millions of kids nationwide. Since 2011, Lookaway has supported the Matthew Renk Foundation with an annual golf event that has raised over $645,000 to date. The Foundation directly supports families that struggle with the expenses of having a child undergoing treatment for cancer and they are referred to the Foundation by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
