Abington Health
Abington Health is making a mini revolution with the most advanced, minimally invasive hip, knee, shoulder, and spine procedures available at the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute. Our orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons have extensive experience in their fields. These medical experts use the newest technology in two premiere locations--Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital. We understand life-altering pain and will help patients make the right treatment decision.
One of Abington’s Health’s revolutionary procedures is the Mini-Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement Surgery. Ask Andrew Star, M.D., Medical Director, Orthopaedic & Spine Institute. He has been performed over 1,000 of these surgeries over the past six years. Dr. Star uses a revolutionary HANA table to position the patient for one mini incision on the front (anterior) of the hip joint. During the surgery, an X-ray machine is used to takes pictures. Special curved instruments allow him to put the prosthesis in as it is installed at a slightly different angle. The incision is made in the natural interval between the gluteal muscles to reach and remove the diseased hip joint. There is no need to detach muscle from the pelvis or femur (upper leg bone), so the most important muscles for hip function are left undisturbed. There are no post surgical precautions with the anterior approach. This procedure focuses on implanting the patient’s new hip with the benefit of less pain, and a faster recovery, including a quick return to driving and other activities.
