The box pictured here has exceptional strong orange color. It is 5 ½ inches high and 13 ½ inches long. Circa 1840, this Shaker Five-fingered box could have been made in New York or New England. The box is maple and pine with copper tacks retaining the original painted finish. Inscribed under the lid "From Lydia to Ella B. June 14, 1875" Stamped on bottom: #4. These boxes were called five-fingered boxes because of the Shaker’s unique use of and proportion of the swallowtail joints with carved fingers that were planed so that they became progressively thinner as they narrow.
